What is Surface Treatment?

Customized Solutions

Subdivision Municipalities – Preservation Treatment

Preservation treatments, such as surface treatment, chip seal, or cape seal, utilize hot liquid asphalt combined with stone to create a durable surface. This method effectively sheds water, protects against oxidation, and provides a high-friction surface, resulting in a safer roadway.

One key advantage of this method is its efficiency. The application process is quick, minimizing disruption to traffic. Vehicles can typically return to the chip and seal surface almost immediately after the materials are applied.

Process:

  1. Application of Hot Liquid Asphalt:

The process begins with spraying hot liquid asphalt onto the existing surface at precise rates, controlled by a computer. This application fills existing cracks and forms a foundation for the chip (stone) to adhere to.

  2. Stone Application:

The chip spreader machine, which is self-propelled and fed by a dump truck, immediately applies the stone behind the liquid asphalt.

  3. Compaction:

The stone is then compacted into the asphalt by a roller, chosen specifically for the job based on its weight and effectiveness.

The final result is a clean aggregate surface with a moisture barrier that helps protect the road base from water infiltration while providing a durable wear layer.

Durability and Lifespan:

The expected lifespan of this surface treatment ranges from 5 to 8 years, depending on traffic volume, vehicle weight, weather conditions, and the quality of the underlying roadbed. In some cases, this method has proven to last up to 15 years.

Addressing Public Concerns:

It is common for the public to associate the term “tar” with negative connotations. However, this preservation treatment offers numerous benefits, including a quick application and improved road safety. We hope this information helps address common questions and concerns.
